#5 Trailblazers Look to Continue Success in District 16 Post-Season Tournament

The #5 nationally ranked, and #1 district seed Vincennes University Trailblazer men’s basketball team will look to build on their 28-and-2 regular season record, and their regular-season district 16 title as the district 16 postseason tournament begins this week. They will play their first game of the tournament at 1:00 p.m. EST at Rend Lake College, in Ina, Illinois. The Trailblazers will take on Lake Land (9-12).

The Trailblazers had another outstanding season. They were nearly unbeatable at home, going 17-and-1 on the VU P.E. Complex floor. They won a district 16 regular-season title going 18-and-2 in district play, with their only district losses being an early stumble at John Logan, and a loss to a tough Wabash Valley team at home without starting power-forward Rade Kukobat in the line-up.

Sophomore Chris Darrington has had a remarkable season scoring the basketball for the Trailblazers. Darrington currently sits at 995 points for his VU career, 5-points shy of becoming the 37th player in school history to crack the 1,000-point mark. He currently sits 15th in the NJCAA in ppg, scoring 21 a night, and also contributes 4.5 assists per game, while shooting nearly 81% from the free-throw stripe.

Fellow sophomore Nate Hansen is also having impressive season. Hansen is averaging 16.1 ppg, 5.7 rebounds, & 3.9 assists per contest. Nate also is shooting lights-out from behind the arc this season at 42%, and is a mere 26 triples shy of breaking the all-time VU record.

Freshmen Isaiah Tisdale & Rade Kukobat have also had splendid rookie years at VU this season. Tisdale is averaging 14.2 ppg, and has served as the offensive sparkplug that the Trailblazers have needed several times this year to get things going, or cut into a large deficit. Kukobat has missed the last handful of games with an injury, but is a rebound or two shy of averaging a double-double a game with points and rebounds.

The Trailblazers are virtually a lock to make the NJCAA Men’s National Basketball Championships in Hutchinson, Kansas because they are a top-10 seed, and will surely receive an at large bid, but they will still strive to secure a district 16 postseason championship this week as well! The first stage of that starts Wednesday, 1:00 p.m. EST, at Rend Lake College, vs. Lake Land (8-12)! Go VU!

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
