#5 Trailblazers Upended by Rival Wabash Valley

The #5 nationally ranked Vincennes University Trailblazers lost a heart-breaker to rival Wabash Valley College tonight 95-to-88 despite strong efforts by sophomore front-court running-mates Chris Darrington and Nate Hansen.

VU got off to a slow start, allowing Wabash Valley to jump out to a 13-to-2 advantage 3 minutes into the contest. Freshman Isaiah Tisdale would get things going for the Trailblazers with a basket and add another at the free-throw stripe to complete the three-point play. However, VU was unable to jumpstart their offense, allowing Wabash Valley to stretch their lead to 12 with 7 minutes to play, and eventually the Warriors would grow their lead to 15 by half-time. Vincennes trailed their opponent 47-35 going into the half despite 14 points from Chris Darrington, and 8 points & 5 rebounds for Nate Hansen.

The second-half started the same way for the Trailblazers as Wabash Valley jumped out to a 4-0 run in the first 45 seconds of play, extending their lead to 16. The Warriors would grow their lead to 21 with 5:38 to play, when suddenly, VU showed signs of life. Chris Darrington buried 3-point baskets on back-to-back possessions, and proved that he would will his Blazers back into the ball game. VU closed within 4 with 3:46 to play! However, Vincennes was unable to close on the Warriors, and the Trailblazers would drop a gut-wrenching, 95-to-88 contest to rival Wabash Valley.

Chris Darrington led all scorers in the game with 34 points, and knocked down 5 triples. Fellow sophomore Nate Hansen added 18 points and 7 rebounds, as well as hitting 4 triples himself. Hansen now has knocked down 148 3’s in his VU career, a mere 26 shy of tying the all-time school record.

The #5 Trailblazers will look to return to their winning ways in district play as they travel to Belleville to take on Southwestern Illinois Community College! Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m.!

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
