Players To Watch

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Robison (New Albany, Ind.) had a fantastic season last year boasting a 5.51 earned run average, .316 batting average, 32 RBIs, and five home runs.

Sophomore Sean Becker (Evansville, Ind.) is returning after spending the majority of last season playing catcher for the Trailblazers. He posted a .290 BA, an impressive .405 on-base percentage, and 12 stolen bases.

Trent Weiss (Hagerstown, Ind.) is yet another sophomore who will be in play this season. He served as an excellent utility and middle infield player in 2019. He batted .313 and had a .404 on-base percentage.

The Trailblazers are also eagerly awaiting the return of 6-foot-3 sophomore outfielder Jared Sermersheim (Jasper, Ind.), who was unfortunately sidelined for the majority of last season due to injury.

VU Coach Chris Barney says. . .

“Our expectation this year is to win the (Mid-West Athletic Conference). That kind of stuff sets the bar for everything else down the road. We’re always aiming to be as competitive as possible and look to move through the conference tournament, and hopefully win.”

“We have the advantage of returning experience this year. These guys have been through it and know what to expect. We also have a lot of versatility on the field, several multi position players. That ability to move around and adjust the players on any given day can be massive. After our first year of settling in, we now have experience in the conference, and that isn’t something you take for granted.”

Notes

  • VU compiled a 25-30 overall record in 2019.
  • The Trailblazers produced a 13-18 league record in their first season as a Midwest-Athletic Conference member.

First Game

The first series of the season is set to take place in Cleveland, Tenn. against Cleveland State Community College. There will be a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 9 at noon EST, followed by a game on Monday, Feb. 10 at 12:30 p.m. EST.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
