Breanna Metzger shines as VUVB gets Region 24 road win

ULLIN, Ill. – The Vincennes University volleyball team took their show on the road Tuesday as the Trailblazers took on Region 24 opponent Shawnee.

VU took the match in a three-set sweep, 25-14, 25-6, 25-14.

“This was our first Region 24 win of the season,” VU head coach Gary Sien said. “We got it done quickly and we played everyone available. Our offense finally got going with a hitting percentage of .395.”

Vincennes was led offensively by sophomore hitter Breanna Metzger, who finished with a team-high 14 points, with 13 kills, 2 block assists and four digs.

“Breanna Metzger had a nice match with 13 kills while hitting .632,” Sien added.

Metzger was aided by freshmen Jamie Russell’s nine kills, Amee Beedle’s six kills and one ace and Anna Johnsey’s five kills and one block assist.

The Trailblazer offense was set up by sophomore Savannah Grimes, who finished with 30 set assists, 15 digs, two kills, an ace and one block assist.

Vincennes now turns their attention to an upcoming tri-match this Friday at Lake Land College. VU will take on host and Region 24 opponent Lake Land at 3 p.m., followed by a match with John Wood College at 5 p.m.

Grace Earp – 8 digs, 1 set assist

Olga Vasovic – 2 points, 1 ace, 1 kill, 4 digs

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
