Claycomb leads VU Golf to 2nd in Trailblazers’ VU Invitational

Vincennes University sophomore Blake Claycomb was the medalist and the Trailblazers were runners-up in their own invitational this weekend at Country Oaks Golf Course in Montgomery. John A. Logan claimed team honors, edging VU by four strokes.
Claycomb posted rounds of 71 and 70 for a total of 141 to earn the top spot. The individual runner-up was Nolan White of Brescia with a score of 143 (72, 71), while John A. Logan’s Nick Woolard was third at 146 (74, 72). Brian Whitson of John A. Logan grabbed fourth place by carding a 147 (74, 73) and VU freshman Keegan McCullough tied with John A. Logan’s Brendan Lewis for fifth place. McCullough and Lewis had identical scoring rounds of 75 and 73 total 148.
In team scoring, Logan’s score of 596 (306, 290) and the Trailblazers’ 608 (304, 304) were followed by:
3rd Brescia (308, 304) 612,
4th Rose-Hulman (324, 307) 631,
T5th Mineral Area (328, 318) 646,
T5th Rend Lake (330, 316) 646,
7th Lincoln Trail (321, 327) 648,
8th Brescia 2 (335, 317) 652, and,
9th Kaskaskia (332, 323) 655.
VU Coach Dennis Chattin was pleased with the Trailblazers’ performance.
“We played well; we had some good schools here for this event, four-year schools and we’re still young,” he said after the event. “But I can see us building confidence. You always want to win, but (John A.) Logan is a good team and (John A. Logan’s second round team score of) 290 is two over and that’s good stuff.”
VU will next be in action at the Sept. 18 and 19 John A. Logan Invitational in Marion, IL.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
