Coach Meeks Reaches 600th Career Win Milestone as Lady Trailblazers Convincingly Defeat Rend Lake

Saturday night was a career night for Women’s Basketball Coach Harry Meeks as the win marked his 600th career victory in 26 seasons at Vincennes University. The Lady Trailblazers trounced Rend Lake by a score of 97-40 at the VU P.E. Complex.

Freshman Sheyanne Street kicked off a 7-0 run by the trailblazers to start the game by knocking down a 3 to score the game’s first points. VU would tighten the screws defensively, and sloppy ball handling would allow the blazers to jump out to a 23 point lead, 29-6 at the end of one quarter of play.

The second quarter was much of the same, as Vincennes went on a 14-2 run to start the quarter, and would secure a 47-17 halftime lead. A pair of freshman had the big key performances in the first half as freshman Ladellia Maggett had 11 points and 4 assists, and freshman Sheyanne Street had 8 points and 4 steals.

Vincennes would roll in the second half, as they would force Rend Lake to turn the ball over 14 times, and would hold the warriors to a chilly 21% from the field. The Lady Trailblazers keep their foot on the gas, and pull away to win by 57 points, moving to 10-and-1 on the season, and most assuredly, moving up several spots in this next week’s NJCAA National Polls.

Several big performances on the night would highlight VU’s win over Rend Lake. Ladellia Maggett had a game-high 20 points, a game-high 9 assists, and 5 steals. Sophomore Laurhen Pickett narrowly missed a double-double as she had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Finally, Freshman Claudia Stan erased 6 shots on the game.

As for Coach Meeks 600th win, after the game he said, “I was really glad to finally make it to 600. It felt like it took forever. At the end of the day, it’s not about me, it’s about the girls. I have been blessed to work with so many great players, work with so many great people at VU, and I loved how welcome they have made me feel during my 26 years at this school. Not many people get 600 wins, so I’m definitely proud of it, but none of it would have been possible without the great young ladies that I have had the pleasure of working with over the years.”

The Lady Trailblazers return to action Tuesday night at Three Rivers in Poplar Bluff, MO. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST!
