VU earns 2 school records, handful of victories, nine national meet qualifying marks at Indiana Little State Championships

MARION, Ind. - The Vincennes University Track & Field Teams saw nine more NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships qualifying marks posted over the weekend at the Indiana Little State Championships at Indiana Wesleyan in Marion. Two of the national qualifying performances were VU school records, set by freshmen Anais Da Silva  who won the 10,000 Meter Run in 37:24.32, and Stoney Prowell (400 Meter Dash with a time of 47.16).

In addition to Da Silva's victory, freshman Jose Cano Pallares won the 1500 Meter Run in 3:56.74 and qualified for the national  meet, sophomore Trey Kennedy topped the field in the Pole Vault at 4.80 Meters and freshman Varvara Klyuchnikova was first in the High Jump with an effort of 1.71 Meters.

"Overall, we performed really well. This was probably the toughest competiton I've seen at Little State since I started coaching," said VU Coach Chris Gafner. "We competed very well and we were rewarded with two school records and many important national qualifying performances."
Other VU national championship qualifiers at the Little State Championships were:
  • Jordan Downs - Pole Vault (Third Place; 4.60 Meters),
  • Isaiah Thomas - Long Jump (Third Place; 7.36 Meters),
  • Gus Lathrop - Javelin (Eighth Place; 47.77 Meters),
  • Adam Warren - 10,000 Meter Run (10th Place; 33:10.94),
  • Men's 4x400 Meter Relay (Trice, Lathrop, Pfeil, Prowell); Third Place; 3:14.90, and,
  • Men's 4x800 Meter Relay (Cano Pallares, Doss, Pfeil, Backes); Third Place; 7:55.18.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
