Darrington, Bell, Puou lead VU Trailblazers past Kaskaskia, 82-76

Freshman guard Chris Darrington scored a career-high 22 points and contributed to an outstanding team free throw shooting effort late in the game to lead the Vincennes University Men's Basketball Team to an 82-76 win Tuesday night over visiting Kaskaskia.

VU freshman guard Jeremiah Bell contributed 15 points, sophomore center Makur Puou had a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds and freshman guard Theo Holloway chipped in with 13. Kaskaskia sophomore guard Elijah Watson had a game-high 23 points.

VU (7-3) escaped the Blue Devils (6-2) who matched the Trailblazers in shooting 50 percent from the floor (28-of-56) for the game. The difference was that VU's 50 percent field goal percentage included 7-of-19 from 3-point range while Kaskaskia hit only two treys.

The Trailblazers, who led by as many as 14 in the second half, also survived several runs by the Blue Devils in the second 20 minutes. With just over five minutes to play, VU was up 66-59 and scored five unanswered points on a basket by Puou and a three-point play by Holloway. But, later on, Kaskaskia reeled off six unanswered points of its own before Darrington answered with a jumper. Following an errant Kaskaskia shot, Darrington hit a free thow to make it 74-68 with 40 seconds remaining. The Blue Devils put yet another scare into the Trailblazers and the P.E. Complex crowd when Kaskaskia freshman guard Joffery Brown stole a VU inbounds pass and freshman forward Dylan Mueller stuck back Brown's missed shot to but the Trailblazer lead to 74-70.

Then Darrington and Bell took over at the free throw line to preserve the win as Kaskaskia committed a series of late fouls to try to get the ball back.

Darrington hit a pair of free throws before Watson penetrated and scored to keep the Blue Devils within 76-72. Bell was fouled as he tried to advance the ball up the floor and drained both from the stripe to move the score to 78-72. However, Kaskaskia scored yet again. Then Darrington was hacked to go back to the line his two free throws make ti 80-74. Brown then hit a pair of his own to make it 80-76 before Bell took another turn at the stripe and canned two shots for the final score of 82-76. When it was all said and done, Darrington had hit 8-of-11 free throws and Bell was good on 5-of-6.

The Trailblazers will be idle until Dec. 2 when they head to Southeastern Illinois in Harrisburg, IL, for an 8:30 p.m. ("Vincennes time") tip-off.
