Early success in initial Div. I season helps VU Volleyball crack national Top 20 in latest rankings

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Vincennes University Volleyball Team’s ascent into the NJCAA Div. I Volleyball national scene has reached the Top 20.

In the NJCAA’s latest rankings, released earlier today, the Trailblazers (13-1) occupy the No. 20 slot after receiving votes in last week’s poll. VU replaces Hutchinson (8-5 at the time of voting), which dropped to this week’s “Received Votes” grouping.

Western Nebraska (18-2 at the time of voting) retained the top spot this week, followed by 11-2 Iowa Western (which moved up from fourth the week before). Missouri State-West Plains (12-3) jumped up to third from fifth and Southern Idaho (13-4) comes in fourth after being last week’s runner-up. Polk State (12-3) tumbled from third to fifth this week.

The remainder of the latest Top 10 were:
6.    Panola,
7.    Hillsborough,
8.    Salt Lake,
9.    Central Florida, and,
10.    Snow.

VU Coach Gary Sien was thrilled with the national ranking. But he said he’s even more proud of the way his team went about grabbing the 20th spot in the poll.

“You’re almost left without words…it’s such an accomplishment,” he said of the Trailblazers’ early-season efforts in their first Div. I campaign. “It’s evidence that this team has worked so hard. Out of 14 matches, 10 have been against Div. I opponents and we went 9-and-1 in those matches. It has been done against very worthy competition.

“It was a tough stretch there for about three weeks. We had one match that could have gone either way (vs. Monroe in VU’s lone setback this season), but we’ve won seven in a row since then and won six in a row before that,” he added. “It will be important to keep streaks like that going as the season wears on.”

VU will travel to Champaign, IL, Friday and Saturday for the Parkland Classic. There, the Trailblazers will meet Kirkwood at 2 p.m. Friday, followed by a match vs. McHenry at 6 p.m. that evening. On Saturday, VU will face Rock Valley at 10 a.m. and Des Moines Area at 12 p.m. Noon.

The next rankings will be released on Sept. 27.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
