Fagg grand slam highlights VU's lopsided win over ISU Club

The Vincennes University Baseball Team got in a mid-season workout Wednesday night when the Trailblazers hosted the Indiana State University Club Baseball Team and trounced the visitors, 14-4, in seven innings.

Freshman Lucas Fagg hit a grand slam home run to key an eight-run first inning in which 12 batters went to the plate for VU. From there, the Trailblazers added a run in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and capped off the scoring with three fifth inning runs. Fagg had five RBI in his 2-for-3 effort. Sophomore Jared Lauer was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and he drove in a run, while sophomore Justin Kirkpatrick was 2-for-2 with four runs scored.

Meanwhile, VU freshman starter Braxton Yeryar, freshman Pete Wissel and sophomore Andrew Sparks allowed all four ISU Club runs in the initial three innings before the visitors were held scoreless in the final four frames.

VU utilized the game to get several pitchers some work. Yeryar was on the mound for one inning, folllowed by Wissel for the second and Sparks worked the third and fourth innings. From there, freshman Mason Bruce struck out all three hitters he faced in the fifth, Lauer had a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth and sophomore Grant Buckley sat ISU down in order in the seventh. The Trailblazer hurlers scattered seven hits and struck out 12 hitters. VU issued four bases on balls.

Up next, VU is scheduled to travel to North Central in Naperville, IL, on Friday and follow up that game with games on Saturday vs. South Suburban and Kankakee in South Holland, IL. The Trailblazers' schedule calls for wrapping up the weekend with a single game on Sunday vs. South Suburban.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
