Goodwin signs with Indiana Tech to continue collegiate hoops career

Recent Vincennes University graduate Jantzen Goodwin on Thursday became the seventh member of the 2014-15 VU Men’s Basketball Team to sign a national letter of intent to continue his collegiate basketball career. Goodwin inked his letter with Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne.
An NAIA-member program, Indiana Tech is a great opportunity, Goodwin said.
“It’s a great school with my major (sports management) and I really think I can help them out,” he said of the Warriors program. “I’m excited to have a chance to keep playing and get my degree.”
Goodwin averaged 3.7 points in 34 games (five starts) for the Trailblazers last season. He shot just under 37 percent from 3-point range. The 6-0 guard scored a career-high 16 early in the season and then matched it later in the year. He also had games of 13 and 10 points. He was 5-for-7 and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc in his 16-point efforts.
A fractured foot prompted a medical redshirt season for Goodwin during his Trailblazer career. As a result, the three-year member of the VU program was part of 100 Trailblazer victories.
VU Coach Todd Franklin said Goodwin’s best attributes are the intangibles he brings to a team. He lauded the Vincennes Lincoln graduate as a player who constantly “fights and battles” with toughness and an excellent work ethic.
“Jantzen will be as tough as anyone to replace because he knew his role and did it very well. If all players had what he has – whether they’re the most talented player on the team or not – the game would be much better,” Franklin said. “Maybe you’re not supposed to say it as a coach, but I will. Jantzen is one of my all-time favorite players, and he has been well-liked and respected by everyone with our program.
“He’s an outstanding young man, and he was that way long before he got to us here at VU,” Franklin continued. “His parents did a great job with him and Coach (Jeff) Hein did a great job with him. It shows in everything he does, and I’m excited to see what he’ll accomplish at Indiana Tech because I think he’ll get quite a bit of playing time.”
Indiana Tech labored to a 10-20 record (7-15 in Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference play) in 2014-15.
Goodwin signing on with the Warriors follows 2014-15 VU sophomores Everett Clemons (Indiana State), Charles Foster (East Carolina), Nigel Holley (East Tennessee State), Donte’ McGill (Florida International), Mychal Mulder (Kentucky) and A.J. Patty (Murray State).

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
