Graham Runs Nation Leading Time at WashU Distance Carnival

St.Louis, MO – Freshman Marcus Graham clocked the #1 time in the NJCAA in the 10,000-meter run at the Washington University at St. Louis Distance Carnival Friday night. Graham’s time of 31 minutes and 08 seconds is also a Vincennes University school-record, breaking the previous mark set by Tyler Kent by 58 seconds.

“I thought it was a great season opener. My coach was able to get me into a great race, and I had a great group of guys to work with to run fast. We discussed things I have to improve on after the race. I have quite a while until the national meet, and I have confidence I will be ready to run a complete race from wire-to-wire at that time. I can’t wait to run another 10K soon! It was a great experience!” said Graham after his Friday-night debut in the 10k.

The runners in the loaded field toed the line, and the gun blasted to signal the start of the race at approximately 10:40 p.m. eastern standard time. The field of nearly 36-runners bunched-up early, no one eager to take the lead in the daunting 25-lap race.

Graham settled into the lead pack early and began to clip-off even laps. Graham came through the first 5,000-meters in 15 minutes and 18 seconds.

He pushed through the second-half of the race, and managed to hold on to the finish. Graham finished 11th out of a total of 78 runners between the two fields, and was the top-finishing freshman in the race. His time of 31 minutes and 08 seconds is again, a Vincennes University school record, and is made even more impressive considering that he is not only a freshman, but it was his first-time running the event.

Coach Blake Albrecht said after the meet, “I was really proud of Marcus tonight. He ran a really tough race. He raced smart, he raced hard, he covered moves, he responded to surges, and he hung really tough late when he was hurting. He showed a lot poise out there. Marcus proved he can not only run really, really fast at the National Meet in 2-months when he has some more event specific work under his belt, but also that he can contend to be a guy that could win a national title in the event.”

Graham becomes the 11th Vincennes University athlete so far this season to qualify for the NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 17th-19th at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas in just the first few weeks of the young season.

Graham will join his Vincennes teammates in returning to action this Friday at the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational in Owensboro, Kentucky this Friday. Meet time is slated to start at 4:30 p.m. EST. Go Trailblazers!
