Ian Weyer, Bartley lead VU to impressive D3 Region 12 golf title; Trailblazers grab three of five top spots to earn another trip to NJCAA championship

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – The Vincennes University Golf Team’s Ian Weyer was the individual medalist, sophomore Jacob Bartley was the runner-up and the Trailblazers placed three golfers in the top five to capture the NJCAA Div. III Region 12 Tournament championship over the weekend at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown, OH.

VU carded a team score of 935. Host Cincinnati State was runner-up at 954 and Schoolcraft finished third with a team score of 989.

"Ian had his best tournament of the year at the right time," VU Coach Dennis Chattin said of Weyer's trifecta of 76 in all three rounds. "He obviously was very consistent with all three scores the same."

Weyer, Bartley and VU sophomore Cameron Weyer were named to the NJCAA All-Region 12 Team after the event. Chattin is the Div. III Region 12 Coach of the Year.

The victory vaults VU into the June 6-10 2016 NJCAA Division III National Championship in Chautauqua, NY. The Trailblazers won the 2013 Div. III National Championship.

"It's great to be going back to the national championship. This will be my fifth trip with a team, but they are always exciting," Chattin said. "(Division Three) doesn't do rankings so it's a little hard to tell how we stack up, but I believe we will be competitive. (Region tournament) scores may look a little high but, with the wind the cold and the length of the golf course, it's was just tough out there. Chautauqua is a different kind of course, as it is a Donald Ross design, so the greens are very undulating and it's very much a short game course."

In the just-completed region tournament, Weyer, a freshman, was a model of consistency in varying weather conditions as he carded a score of 76 in each of three rounds to post a total of 228. Bartley shot scores of 75, 79 and 77 to finish at 231 and claim the runner-up spot while sophomore Cameron Weyer (Ian Weyer’s brother) had rounds of 73, 80 and 84 (total of 237) to grab fifth place.

"Jacob is a consistent battler, so I was glad to see that for him," Chattin said of Bartley's runner-up performance.

Cincinnati State’s Alex Ebel (233) and Hayden Burns (237) were third and fourth, respectively.

Ian Weyer was four strokes up on Ebel after the first round and the pair was tied atop the leader board at the end of two rounds. The Trailblazers held a 10-stroke lead (308-318) over Cincinnati State after the first two rounds.

“We really had tough conditions with the cold and wind, and we had a wet, long golf course so the scores are a little high on paper but good in actuality,” Chattin said after the initial two rounds. “We really struggled on the back 9 in the second round. I don't know if we got tired or if the conditions finally got to us, but we dropped several strokes on those nine holes.”

VU bent but wouldn’t break. Weyer’s third round of 76 for the final 18 holes provided the difference as Ebel fell to a Round 3 score of 81 and Bartley’s third round score of 77 propelled the VU sophomore into second place for the event.
