Klyuchnikova Leads Lady Trailblazers at Little State Championships

Upland, IN – Fresno State commit Varvara Klyuchnikova won both the high jump & the triple jump at the Little State Championships this weekend hosted by Taylor University to lead the Lady Trailblazers track and field team to a 5th place finish.

Klyuchnikova started day 1 by winning the high jump with a leap of 5’7”. Very impressive considering the windy, and cold conditions she was asked to compete in. She would also pick up the win in the triple jump on Saturday with a hop, skip, and a jump, of 36’5 ¾”. Klyuchnikova scored 20 of the 65 team points for VU.

Freshman Jamesha Western also was a huge for VU at the Little State Championships. Western finished 2nd in the shot put, 2nd in the discus, and 7th in the hammer throw. Her toss of 154’11” is the 3rd best hammer throw mark in school history, and helped her tally up 18 points of her own for the Lady Blazers.

Sophomore Anais Da Silva qualified for the NJCAA National Meet hosted by Hutchinson CC on May 18th-20th in the 10,000m run. Her time of 37:52 was good enough for 2nd place in the meet.

Freshman Merica Valdez vaulted to a big PR in the pole vault over the weekend. Valdez’ mark of 12’ 1 ½” was good enough for 3rd place in the meet, and the 3rd best mark in VU history. Fellow vault-mate Aintzane Castarlenas finished 4th in the event with a mark of 11’9”.

Other Lady Blazers scoring points included: freshman Sydney Davidson finishing 5th in the 1500m run, & 8th in the 800. Paige Jones also finished 6th in the high jump.

The Lady Trailblazers will return to action May 4th-6th as they will host the Region XII Championships! Be sure to make your way out to support your Trailblazers!
