Lady Blazers basketball wins 8th in a row

VINCENNES, Ind. — The Vincennes University women’s basketball team picked up a Region 24 victory over Lincoln Trail, winning 89-73, at the P.E. Complex on Wednesday.

The Lady Trailblazers (11-3, 5-0 Region 24) scored their eighth consecutive victory after leading 29-16, 49-30 and 69-51 at the quarter stops. Lincoln Trail (8-2) saw a five-game winning streak snapped.

VU never trailed, and led by as many as 15 points in the opening period, 19 in the second and 24 in the third. Lincoln Trail was able to get no closer than the 16-point final margin the rest of the way.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.) posted a double-double. She hit 10 of 13 shots and finished with 23 points, while grabbing 16 rebounds, eight at the offensive end.

Sophomore Jhala Henry (Jeffersonville, Ind.) tallied a team-leading 24 points, while freshman Amani Brown (Terre Haute, Ind.) added 20 and sophomore Jaynice Stovall (Covington, Ky.) 12.

Freshman Elena Aznar Chamorro (Zaragoza, Spain) came through with eight rebounds, while sophomore Grace Yocum (Frankfort, Ky.) blocked a team-high three shots.

Stovall contributed a team-high six assists. She also had three steals to share team honors with Henry.

VU Coach Harry Meeks says. . .

“I thought we got off to a good start. But in the second half, we just didn’t play. We didn’t guard. We didn’t run any offense. We had people on the floor who acted like they’d forgotten everything we’ve ever worked on. They outplayed us in the second half.”

“(Hawkins) has been carrying us for the last four or five games. Fess does a great job. She always shows up.”

  • The Lady Trailblazers are now the only team to have an undefeated record in Region 24 play.
  • Lincoln Trail is coached by former VU player Scott Sparks.
  • Freshman Kelsey Mitchell (Tipton, Ind.) led Lincoln Trail with 19 points.
  • Despite three wins over ranked teams this season, the Lady Trailblazers couldn’t crack the top 25 when the NJCAA Division I poll was released on Monday.

Next up

The Lady Trailblazers will travel to Ina, Ill., on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game ET against Rend Lake. VU plays Dec. 28-29 in the Mineral Area Classic in Park Hills, Mo.
