Lady Blazers Close out season with Road-Win over SWIC

Belleville, IL – The #22 nationally ranked Vincennes University Women’s Basketball team closed out their regular season schedule with a 70-to-40 win at Southwestern Illinois College. The 25th win of the season locks the team into the 2nd overall seed in the district tournament, and was highlighted by yet another 20-point night from Sophomore Laurhen Pickett.

Defense was the name of the game in the first-quarter for the Lady Blazers. The team held their opponent to just 4 points in the first quarter, and forced them to turn the ball over nearly 6 times, while cruising to a 13-to-6 lead after 10 minutes of play had elapsed in the game.

Laurhen Pickett was the offensive spark plug that the Lady Blazers need in the first-half. Pickett scored 8 of the team’s 13 first-quarter points, then continued her impressive scoring night by adding 8-more of VU’s 18 2nd quarter points. She scored 16 of the Lady Trailblazers 31 half-time points, and the team led SWIC by a count of 17, 31-to-14.

The Lady Trailblazers were fired up to avenge their loss earlier in the week to rival Wabash Valley, and had no plans of letting off the trigger in the 2nd-half. However, this time, freshman Claudia Stan decided she would take over the scoring for the team in the 3rd. Stan poured in 8-points in the quarter, and the Blazers outscored SWIC 23-to-9 in the 3rd to pull to a 31-point lead after 3 quarters of play.

VU would coast to a 70-40 victory over District B opponent Southwestern Illinois to capture their 25th win of the season, and to lock-up the #2 seed in the District B tournament.

Sophomore Laurhen Pickett led the charge in the scoring column for the Lady Blazers. Pickett scored 23 points, and pulled-down 7 rebounds in the game. Freshman Ladellia Maggett had another nice night directing the offense. The North Chicago native scored 12 points, and dished out 7 assists.

The Lady Blazers begin their post-season push for the National Tournament with their first-round game of the District B contest on Tuesday at the Vincennes University P.E. Complex. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. EST! Come out and support your Lady Blazers as they make a push to punch their ticket to Lubbock, Texas!

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
