Lady Blazers dominate Kaskaskia

CENTRALIA, Ill. – Five Vincennes University women’s basketball players scored in double figures and the Trailblazers dominated Kaskaskia 92-42 in a Region 24 opener on Wednesday.

VU Statistical Leaders

Freshman Gara Jorge Garcia (Galdar, Spain) poured in 23 points off the bench. She sank 10 of 14 shots from the field. She finished with four steals, four rebounds and two assists.

Sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.) snagged 20 rebounds and added 14 points.

Sophomore Jhala Henry (Jeffersonville, Ind.) had 15 points, three steals and three rebounds.

Sophomore Jaynice Stovall (Covington, Ky.) tallied 13 points, seven assists, five steals and three rebounds.

Freshman Amani Brown (Terre Haute, Ind.) contributed 10 points and five assists.

Notes

  • VU shot 50.7 percent from the field by sinking 36 of 71 shots.
  • The Trailblazers outrebounded Kaskaskia 43-18.
  • VU owns a 5-3 overall record.

Next up

The Trailblazers host the Sodexo Classic Nov. 22-23 in the P.E. Complex.  They play the Lindenwood-Belleville junior varsity team at 5 p.m. EST on Nov. 22.  VU faces Indiana Tech’s reserve squad on Nov. 23 at 3 p.m.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
