Lady Blazers dominate Rend Lake for ninth straight win


INA, Ill. -  The Vincennes University women’s basketball team won its ninth game in row with a dominant performance over Rend Lake, winning 98-73 on Saturday.

With the victory, the Trailblazers are 12-3 overall and 6-0 in Region 24.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.) recorded her 11th double-double this season. She had 18 rebounds and 12 points. She also added three steals and two blocks.

Freshmen Amani Brown (Terre Haute, Ind.) and Gara Jorge Garcia (Galdar, Spain) scored 18 points apiece. Garcia also contributed five steals, three assists and three rebounds. Brown added three assists.

Sophomore Jhala Henry (Jeffersonville, Ind.) tallied 17 points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore Jaynice Stovall (Covington, Ky.)  finished with 15 points, six assists, three steals and three rebounds.

Freshman Elena Aznar Chamorro (Zaragoza, Spain) nabbed four steals.


  • Hawkins leads NJCAA Division I in field goal percentage (68.9 percent). She also leads the nation in total rebounds (210) and offensive rebounds (103). Hawkins is No. 2 in offensive rebounds per game (7.9). She ranks third in rebounds per game (14.0).
  • Henry is No. 3 in the nation in steals (54).
  • Stovall ranks sixth in assists (81) and seventh in steals (47).

The Trailblazers wrap up 2019 at the Mineral Area Classic Dec. 28-29 in Park Hills, Mo. They play Malcom X on Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. EST. They take on Grand Rapids on Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. EST.

Play for Kay Cancer Awareness

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.
