Lady Blazers fall to #15 Wabash Valley in Final Regular-Season Home Game

The #22 Lady Blazers lost a tough one to rival #15 Wabash Valley at home tonight 83-64 despite big nights from freshman Ladellia Maggett and sophomore Laurhen Pickett.

VU got off to a rocky start as the Lady Warriors of Wabash Valley College jumped out to an 8-0 run right from the opening tip. Sophomore Milana Matias would finally stop the bleeding with an acrobatic lay-up to get VU on the board about 2 minutes into the game. Matias would proceed to score 8 of VU’s first 10 points to try to will the Lady Blazers back into the game. It worked. As the Vincennes pulled within 2 after a triple from sophomore Sheyanne Street. The Lady Blazers trailed by a bucket, 15-13 after one quarter of play.

Laurhen Pickett caught fire in the second, and would score on the Lady Trailblazers first 2 possessions, giving VU their first lead a minute into the 2nd quarter.  However, VU’s offense stalled with about 8:36 to play in the half, and the Lady Warriors would outscore VU 23-10 in the last 8 minutes to take a 40-to-27 lead into half-time. Laurhen Pickett and Milana Matias had 10 a-piece to lead the way for VU in the first-half.

VU clawed their way back into the game thanks to Freshman Ladellia Maggett scoring 12 of her 21 points in the 3rd quarter, and The Lady Blazers pulled within 9 with one quarter left in regulation. However, the wheels would fell-off for VU in the 4th as they were outscored by Wabash Valley 29-19, and fell to the #15 Warriors 83-to-64. The loss gives Wabash Valley the regular-season title, and clinches them the #1 seed in the District B tournament starting next week. Despite the loss, VU still will clinch the #2 seed in the tournament, and the loss only marks the 5th time in 29 tries that the Lady Blazers have not come out victorious.

Leading the way in the scoring column was freshman Ladellia Maggett. Maggett knocked-down 21 points, and dished out 4 assists. Sophomore Laurhen Pickett recorded her 14th double-double of the year as she scored 18 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, and erased 3 shots. The last Lady Blazers in double-figures scoring on the night was Milana Matias. Matias racked up 10 points, and had 5 rebounds.

The Vincennes University Basketball team will look to return to their winning ways as they are back in action Friday at Southwestern Illinois! Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. EST! Go VU!
