Lapel’s Connor Hickey signs with VU Bowling for 2016-17

Lapel High School bowling standout Connor Hickey recently signed a national letter of intent to attend Vincennes University and compete on the Trailblazer bowling team.

The southpaw provides VU Coach Gary Sparks’ squad with another four-year competitor, beginning next season, and the VU program offers Hickey a chance to continue his bowling career while pursuing a degree in homeland security. Hickey, who was familiar with the reputations of the VU bowling program and Sparks as coach, said he also felt a sense of comfort with the coach and the Trailblazers that figures to make him a solid fit.

“When I first tried out (with the VU team), (Sparks) told me that schools like Wichita State, for example, have 30-man rosters and coaches can’t work as closely with bowlers like he can here at VU,” Hickey said. “That (closer coach-bowler working relationship) really appealed to me. I’m really looking forward to getting started with the VU team.”

Hickey will arrive at VU with a prep bowling resume’ that includes a state tournament semi-state round appearance in singles competition. He also garnered Lapel’s high average as a junior and second highest average during his senior season. His high scores for the Bulldogs were 298 and 299.

Hickey said he’s confident that he can contribute heavily to the Trailblazers’ success.

“I feel like I have the ability to change ball speed and use all parts of the lane,” he said. “I’m left-handed too, and I think there are advantages to that as well.”

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
