Miller, Pickett lead VU women past SIC, 81-63

The Vincennes University Women's Basketball Team grabbed its 20th victory of the season Wednesday when the Trailblazers turned away visiting Southeastern Illinois, 81-63, behind freshman Marley Miller's 15 points and freshman Laurhen Pickett's double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Miller (who had three treys) and Pickett led a balanced scoring attack for VU (20-4) as the Trailblazers also got 11 points from sophomore Emily Lueken and 10 each from sophomores Brooke Dossett and Chelsea Bentley.
The Trailblazers trailed throughout the first half. At one point, VU was down nine points early in the second quarter, but rallied to outscore the visiting Falcons, 23-10 in the second stanza and lead, 38-30, at halftime. Following the break, the Trailblazers continued to execute better on the offensive end, thanks in part to Miller's nine second half points and Pickett's eight after halftime. Bentley had six of her points and Dossett five after the break. Meanwhile, Pickett hauled in seven of her rebounds in the decisive second half while VU was pulling away.
The Trailblazers led by as many as 21 at one point in the fourth quarter.
VU will be idle now until Wednesday, Feb. 10, when the Trailblazers travel to John A. Logan in Carterville, IL, for a 6 p.m. ("Vincennes time") tip-off. The game will be followed by the VU men vs. the host Volunteers at about 8 p.m.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
