Miller, Taylor lead VU to 2nd round of NJCAA national tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas – The 19th-seeded Vincennes University Women’s Basketball Team earned a spot in the second round of the NJCAA Div. I Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament with a 57-51 win over No. 14 seed Northeast (NE) Tuesday in Lubbock, TX.

Freshman Marley Miller scored 15 points and sophomore Imani Taylor (pictured) pulled down 19 rebounds to lead the Trailblazers in the victory. VU (29-5) will now face No. 3 seed Salt Lake (30-2) at 6 p.m. (EST or “Vincennes time”) Wednesday.

Sophomores Brooke Dossett and Chelsea Bentley both scored 11 points and sophomore Kyra Tucker finished with nine points for the Trailblazers.

VU led 14-10 after one quarter and used a 9-0 spurt as part of a 15-4 run in the second quarter to post a 29-19 advantage at halftime. The Trailblazers never trailed the rest of the game and maintained a lead that was cut to four at 51-47 with about five minutes to play. But VU held off the Hawks who outscored the Trailblazers in the second half but had only two field goals in the final five minutes while the Trailblazers got four late free throws from Dossett and one from Pickett to put the game on ice.

The Trailblazers struggled with shooting the ball (32.8 percent overall and 14 percent from 3-point range), but VU made up for the shooting woes by keeping Northeast from having many second chances while the Hawks shot poorly as well. VU outrebounded Northeast (which shot 32.3 percent) by a 54-42 margin. The Trailblazers claimed a 33-19 board advantage in the first half, led by Taylor’s 12 first half caroms.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
