Murphy, Kennedy, Moricz lead VU at Indiana Little State Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - Vincennes University sophomore Robert Murphy set new VU school records in three events and Trailblazer pole vaulters Trey Kennedy and Kaitlyn Moricz won events as the VU men finished fifth and the VU women were seventh at the Indiana Little State Championships Friday and Saturday, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University.
 
The Vincennes men scored 92.5 points in their fifth place finish (out of 12 teams), following winner Indiana Wesleyan with 167 points, second place Bethel (121.5 points), Marian in third (97 points) and the University of Indianapolis in fourth place (94 points).
 
VU's women earned their seventh place spot (out of 12 teams) with 53 points. University of Indianapolis won the meet with 211.5 points. Indiana Wesleyan was runner-up with 168.5 points, while Taylor was third (95 points), Bethel came in fourth (86 points) and St. Joseph's rounded out the top 5 with 58 points. Marian was just ahead of VU with 55 points.
 
Murphy's school record-setting performances over the weekend were in the Steeplechase, 1500 Meter Run and 5000 Meter Run. The efforts earned him Track Athletes of the Championships honors.
 
"Overall, it was a solid meet with some very good performances," VU Coach Chris Gafner said.  "Our pole vaulters performed very well as a group."
 
Murphy claimed the Steeplechase event with a time of 9:13.88 to outdistance second place Joel Keller of the University of Indianapolis at 9:24.13. VU's Michael Mest was 10th (10:18.88). In the 1500 Meter Run, Murphy was the runner-up to Logan Barrett of St. Joseph's (3:51.06). Murphy turned in a time of 3:52.32. Finally, Murphy finished fourth (14:53.56) in the 5000 Meter Run, which was won by Indiana Wesleyan's Jacob Reinking (14:38.68).
 
In Kennedy's Pole Vault title (4.7 meters), he led a VU assault on the top 10. Trailblazer Blake Marsee was second (4.55 meters), while VU's Michael Boger was fourth (4.4 meters) and Blake Edwards came in 10th (3.95 meters).
 
Moricz claimed the women's pole vault crown with a vault of 3.75 meters. Whitney Grace of Bethel was second at 3.5 meters and VU's Lillian Schneider was eighth (3.2 meters).

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.
