Neill, Moreno lead nationally-ranked VU cross country teams at Greater Louisville Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Vincennes University men's and women's cross country teams competed on Oct. 3 in the Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. Each team competed in the Blue race against some of the nation's best four-year programs.

VU’s NJCAA ninth-ranked men's squad was led by Matthew Neill (Omagh, Ireland). He covered the 8K course in 25:57 (29th).

Also finishing in VU’s top five were sophomore Nick Vogt (Cincinnati, Ohio) (72nd, 27:38), freshman Trenton Faulkner (Vincennes) (89th, 28:12), freshman Gavyn Mundt (Hanover, Ind.) (113th, 30:14) and sophomore Joshua Hodge (Rushville, Ind.) (114th, 30:29).

Sophomore Meagan Moreno (Morton, Ill.) led VU’s 11th-ranked women’s team with a 27th-place finish. She covered the 5K course in 19:00 flat.

Also finishing in the top five runners for the Trailblazers were sophomore Kyra Young 19:50 (South Bend, Ind.) (68th 19”:50), freshman Jacy Collins (Shakamak, Ind.) (117th, 21:25), freshman Kaitlyn Koenig (Terre Haute, Ind.) (148th, 23:50) and sophomore Emily Remsburg (Elnora, Ind.) (155th, 25:51).

VU Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach Chris Gafner says:
"It was a great day for racing, and several of our runners took advantage of the competition and conditions to get out and compete at a high level and run season-best times."

"We have some injuries that kept athletes from participating, but we also had some people really step up in their absence. As a team, we are getting healthy and will continue to improve through our hard work and effort. We will be racing at full strength soon as we look ahead to postseason competition."

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
