Next VU Trailblazer Baseball Youth Camp set for April 3; Day-long camp offers instruction in all areas of the game

The Vincennes University Blazer Baseball Team’s next youth camp for players ages 6-13 will be Sunday, April 3, at VU’s Jerry Blemker Baseball Field. The facility is located at 1562 Old Terre Haute Road (across the street from the Vincennes softball fields). In the event of inclement weather, the camp’s rain date will be Tuesday, April 12.

“This will be a great opportunity for children to be under the tutelage of the Trailblazer Baseball coaching staff,” said VU Assistant Coach Cole Vicars. “We’ll cover all aspects of the game; hitting, pitching and catching and defense. This would be a great time for everyone to get the rust off and prepare for spring as it gets closer.”

The workout will be an all-day event from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. All camp-goers should bring their own equipment, marked with their names.

Early Registration will be available until Friday, March 25, and the camp fee until that date will be $55. After March 25, the fee will be $60 (take 10 percent off the fee if a family sends more than one sibling to the camp. If sending more than two siblings, call Vicars). Please make all checks payable to: Vincennes University Baseball, 1002 N. First St., PE-19, Vincennes, IN 47591. Please complete the attached registration form and return it with a check to the above address.

The camp will include a pizza party for lunch, and each participant will receive a camp t-shirt.

The camp day’s schedule will be as follows:

9:30-9:40 a.m. – Introduction of Coaches and Staff,

9:40-10 a.m.  – Vincennes University Baseball Stretching Routine,

10-10:25 a.m. – Baserunning,

10:25-10:30 a.m. – Water Break,

10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Station Work (two 10-minute circuits at each station),

  • First Circuit: Hitting Cage (front toss), Soft-Toss, Live Batting Practice, Wiffle Balls, Tees and Throwing Station,
  • Second Circuit: Fielding (ground balls, outfield play, fly balls, relays, run-downs and pitching mechanics),

12:30-1:15 p.m. – Pizza party,

1:15-1:45 p.m. – Batting Practice (3 stations on the field for BP),

1:45-2:30 p.m. – Games,

2:30 p.m. – Conclude camp and hand out t-shirts.

All players should bring their own equipment, marked with their names on each piece.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
