No. 1 Vincennes University nets 1,800th win

VINCENNES, Ind. - The top-ranked Vincennes University men’s basketball team collected the program’s 1,800th all-time win Saturday, defeating Shawnee for an 80-53 Region 24 victory at the P.E. Complex.

Only Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College has more all-time wins than the Trailblazers.

VU earned the milestone victory with a dominant performance.

The Trailblazers scored the game’s first nine points and led 22-5 on their way to a 41-19 bulge by halftime. The Saints closed to within 55-44 with 9:30 remaining, but the Blazers ended up outscoring the visitors in the second half too, 39-34.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Chuka Mekkam (Portland, Ore.) netted three 3-pointers and cleared 20 points for the second game in a row with a game-high 21 for the Trailblazers (15-2, 6-1 Region 24). He hit 3-of-7 from 3-point range and 6-of-8 free throws. The sophomore had five assists without a turnover.

Sophomore Kevin Osawe (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Craig Porter (Terre Haute, Ind.) and sophomore Colton Sandage (Bloomington, Ill.) combined for 20 points. Porter had 12 points, nine rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals. Sandage hit his first two 3-point shots and scored all eight of his points in the first half.

Sophomore Kevin Kone (Osny, France) came off the bench to nearly record a double-double, tallying 10 points and nine rebounds in 24 minutes.

VU Coach Todd Franklin says. . .

"I was glad to be a part of it (the 1,800th all-time win), and I'm glad to be a part of the history of this place, which I consider the best in junior college basketball and may be of all of basketball."

“Our hope is that Chuka would build off of Wednesday (a career-high 25 points at Olney Central). I don't think he had a turnover in the last two games, and as a point guard that's real important for us. We've always had good guards, and Mekkam and Porter are developing into a good set of guards."

  • The Trailblazers improved to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in Region 24.
  • Osawe and Porter have scored in double figures in eight consecutive games.
  • Freshman Cameron Traylor (Culloden, Ga.) made his VU debut. The 5-11 guard had two points and two assists in 13 minutes of play.
  • Tyreek Montgomery scored 20 points for Shawnee (10-5, 4-3).

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
