No. 12 Vincennes University men’s basketball set to embark on postseason

VINCENNES, Ind. – The No. 12 Vincennes University men’s basketball team begins its pursuit of an eighth consecutive trip to the national tournament in hopes of defending the national championship with a NJCAA Division I Central District Tournament quarterfinal game on March 2.

The Trailblazers (26-4) finished the regular season as the No. 12 ranked team in the NJCAA Division I national poll and No. 2 in region 24, having the best overall record in the district.

VU is the No. 2 seed in the 2020 Central District Men’s Basketball Tournament taking place February 29-March 8. Rend Lake College in Ina, Illinois will host tournament games played on March 2, 4 and 6.

The Central District Tournament seeds in order are: No. 1 John A. Logan, No. 2 Vincennes University, No.3 Olney Central, No. 4 Wabash Valley, No. 5 Lincoln Trail, No. 6 Southwestern Illinois, No.7 Lewis & Clark, No. 8 Shawnee, No. 9 Kaskaskia, No.10 Lake Land, No. 11 Southeastern Illinois.

VU opens the postseason on March 2 in a quarterfinal at 6 p.m. EST against the winner of a first-round, play-in game between Lake Land and Lewis and Clark.

If the Trailblazers win their quarterfinal, they will play in the semifinals on March 4.

Semifinal winners advance to the championship game on March 6 at 8 p.m. EST. The Central District champion earns an automatic bid to the national tournament. The NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship is March 16-21 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

VU is not only the defending national champion but has also made seven straight national tournament appearances and holds the record for the longest streak of consecutive national tournament appearances in the modern era of junior college basketball.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
