No. 24 VU women hold on at Rend Lake for 16th victory of the season

INA, Ill. - The Vincennes University Women's Basketball Team saw a 10-point lead evaporate late in the game, but escaped Saturday at Rend Lake with a 61-59 win to continue the 24th-ranked Trailblazers' win streak. The Trailblazers struggled with their shooting from long distance and at the free throw line throughout the day, but made the necessary plays and shots in the closing seconds to grab the victory.

Sophomore Kyra Tucker scored all 17 of her points in the second half and freshmen Joshlyn King and Marley Miller added 12 points each to lead VU (16-1). Miller had 10 of her points in the first half. King's biggest bucket was the biggest of the game because it gave the Trailblazers their final slim margin of victory after she rebounded a teammate's miss and sank a layup with 12.1 seconds to play. After the Warriors inbounded the ball and crossed midcourt, King stole a pass on Rend Lake's final possession and dribbled toward the other end to run out the clock and put it away.

VU battled to a 27-22 lead at halftime and held a 44-36 advantage after three quarters. The Trailblazers had stretched the lead to 49-39 with about 6:00 remaining before Rend Lake knocked down a couple of 3-pointers to key a late surge that helped the Warriors grab the lead on two occasions before Tucker's late baskets and free throw tied it back up.

Although the Trailblazers led much of the game, which provided VU's 16th consecutive win after dropping the first game of the season, they could never sustain a long enough run to grab full control of the contest. VU missed out on several opportunities by shooting only 13-for-30 at the free throw line, including a 6-of-17 performance at the stripe in the second half. The Trailblazers also hit only two 3-pointers on the day.

VU will host Southwestern Illinois at 5 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the NJCAA No. 22 VU men and Southwestern Illinois tipping off at 7 p.m.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
