No. 4 Trailblazers fall in Region 24 opener at Olney Central

OLNEY, Ill. – The NJCAA Division I basketball rankings released Monday afternoon and had the Vincennes University Trailblazers making the jump into the top-5 for the first time this season.

That ranking will likely not stand next week as the Blazers fell for the first time this season on the road to Olney Central 79-70.

This matchup was back-and-forth from the beginning. Vincennes had the upper hand early but were never able to build a lead that would hold.

Olney Central took the lead late in the first half and were able to grow a five-point margin heading into the halftime break.

Freshman big man Justin Archer got going early, heading into the break with nine points. Freshman Brandon Muntu and sophomore Jaidon Hunter had five points at halftime as well.

The Trailblazers came out of the locker room firing and were able to even the game at 41-all before the Blue Knights responded with a 9-0 scoring run.

Vincennes would not go away quietly though, as the Blazers drew back within striking distance late with a steal and lay-in by Antonio Watson II got VU within four with just over a minute to go.

Olney Central’s free throw shooting was lights out Monday night as the Blue Knights were able to tack on a few more points late to grow the lead to the eventual nine-point margin.

Jaidon Hunter led the Trailblazers in the score column with 14 points while also swiping three steals.

Justin Archer would finish with 13 points and five rebounds before fouling out midway through the second half.

Brandon Muntu was the third Trailblazer to score in double-figures, finishing with 11 points and four boards.

Freshman Brevin Jefferson got the start for the first time this season and came away with nine points, two rebounds and two assists.

Vincennes will have a quick turnaround as the Trailblazers host Lake Land College Wednesday, Feb. 3. Tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. eastern.
