No. 5 Vincennes University shuts down Kaskaskia

VINCENNES, Ind. — The fifth-ranked Vincennes University men’s basketball team has made defense its calling card, and the Trailblazers came through in that fashion again with an 85-51 Region 24 win over Kaskaskia at the P.E. Complex on Wednesday.

The Trailblazers entered the game allowing just 60.3 points per game — third-best in NJCAA Division I. The Blue Devils are the ninth team this season that has failed to reach 60 points against the Trailblazers.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Craig Porter (Terre Haute, Ind.) led three VU players in double figures with 22 points, as he hit seven of 11 shots from the floor. Sophomore Chuka Mekkam (Portland, Ore.) added 16 points, while freshman Christian Wells (Muncie, Ind.) contributed 10.

Porter grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Trailblazers to a 37-30 edge on the glass, while sophomore Kevin Kone (Osny, France) snared six.

Mekkam led VU with five assists, while Porter and freshman Cameron Traylor (Culloden, Ga.) both passed for three.

Porter’s three steals led the team, while sophomore Chinedu Okanu (Gary, Ind.), Porter and freshman John Ukomadu (Detroit, Mich.) all blocked shots.

VU Coach Todd Franklin says. . .

“I thought we got off to a pretty good start and took them out of some things we wanted to take them out of. We moved the ball pretty well early in the game and got some pretty good looks.”

“It was a physical game. It was hard to look real pretty. I thought, overall, we fought through it and I think we’re better for it. It was good for us to play that grinding kind of game we’re going to see going forward.”

  • The Trailblazers own an 18-2 overall record. VU is 9-1 in Region 24.
  • It was VU’s second win over the Blue Devils this season. Vincennes won in Centralia, Ill., to start Region 24 play, 87-57, on Nov. 20.
  • VU now leads the all-time series with Kaskaskia, 65-12.
  • The Trailblazers had one of their better shooting games, sinking 27 of 54 shots for 50 percent. That includes an eight of 14 showing from beyond the 3-point line.
  • The Trailblazers had a 12-point run on the way to a 38-19 lead at halftime.
  • The 34-point final margin of victory was the biggest VU lead of the night.
  • The Trailblazers are 15-0 in games at the P.E. Complex this season.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
