Play4Kay efforts go center-stage Wednesday at VU’s games; Annual event looking to raise $5,000 this year

The Vincennes University Athletic Department, in cooperation with VU Student Activities and Housing & Residential Life, will again work to increase awareness of breast cancer and help generate research funds Wednesday when the Trailblazer Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams host Southeastern Illinois (women at 5 p.m.; men at 7 p.m.) at the VU P.E. Complex.

The 2015 Play4Kay initiative at VU generated $5,766.77 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. In 2014, local efforts netted $3,446.50 while the first-year initiative garnered $2,229.57. Since its inception in 2007, the Play4Kay Cancer Fund's national initiative has generated more than $2.6 million.

Many fun activities are planned for halftimes and timeouts during the games.

In partnership with The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and The V Foundation, VU will donate admission from the Feb. 3 gate admission to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. In addition, VU Athletic Director and Women’s Basketball Coach Harry Meeks is distributing pledge cards around the VU campus, but cards are also available in the VU Athletic Office on the bottom floor at the P.E. Complex. The cards will be distributed and accepted in return throughout the month of February.

On game night, VU Athletics will conduct a silent auction as another Play4Kay fund-raiser. Items for bidding include:

Fans are urged to wear pink or the official blue VU Play4Kay t-shirt to the games. T-shirts may be purchased for $10 at the VU Athletic Office or purchased the night of the Play4Kay event. As of today, about 100 of the blue shirts with pink graphics and lettering remain available for sale.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
