Roberts’ grand slam keys VU Blazer Baseball’s 14-8 win over Olney Central

Freshman outfielder Chandler Roberts clubbed a grand slam home run and freshman Braxton Yeryar threw five innings of three-hit relief as the Vincennes University Baseball Team topped Olney Central, 12-8, Wednesday afternoon at Jerry Blemker Field.

Roberts’ blast keyed the Trailblazers’ seven-run fourth inning in which VU sent 10 batters to the plate.

Meanwhile, Yeryar came on in the fourth after redshirt freshman Austin Gossmann went the first three innings as he continues to work his way back from injury.

Roberts finished the day 1-for-5 with the four RBI. Freshman second baseman Dylan Collins went 3-for-4 with his first collegiate base hit and two RBI and freshman outfielder Zach Pate was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in. In addition, sophomore catcher Austin Slover had two hits in four at-bats and a RBI while freshman third baseman Mason Bruce was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Along with Roberts’ grand slam and Kirkpatrick’s triple, VU (10-8) got doubles from Slover and  freshman pinch hitter Cade Luker.

All that production made up much of the Trailblazers’ 15-hit attack.

On the hill, Gossmann battled and gave up three hits, struck out one and walked two in his three innings. Yeryar also yielded three hits while fanning three hitters and walking one. Sophomore Andrew Sparks got a strikeout and induced a double play to get out of a ninth inning bases-loaded situation without any runs and end the game.

The scoring started early for both teams. Olney Central (15-3) put three runs on the board in the first with a pair of hits, aided by a VU error. The Trailblazers then came up in the bottom half of the first and jumped ahead with four runs on four hits and a Blue Knight error.

VU sophomore shortstop and leadoff hitter Justin Kirkpatrick singled to start things and then stole second and third before he and Bruce came home on sophomore Levi Archer’s one-out single. The Trailblazers added on when Collins singled up the middle with two outs to score Archer and Slover who had also singled.

Olney Central tied it up at 4-all in the second inning and went ahead, 6-4, in the third. In the bottom of the third, the Trailblazers moved closer to the Blue Knights with VU’s fifth run.

Yeryar came in and sat Olney Central down 1-2-3 in the fourth and the Trailblazers then did most of their damage in the next half inning. Kirkpatrick led off again and, this time, tripled to the deepest part of the field. With one out, Bruce was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners and Slover singled to plate Kirkpatrick. Archer was then plunked by a pitch and Pate singled to bring in Slover.

Sophomore first baseman Grant Buckley walked to keep the inning going and, after the Trailblazers’ second out of the inning, Roberts came to the plate as the inning’s ninth batter to rip the first pitch from Olney Central’s Ryan Moore to right field for the grand slam and a 10-6 VU lead.

Olney Central added its final two runs in the sixth inning when the Blue Knights started with back-to-back doubles and followed with a sacrifice and run-scoring single.

The Trailblazers got the pair of runs back later in the sixth as Buckley led off with a single, Collins moved him to second with a sacrifice, Kirkpatrick drew a two-out walk, freshman outfielder Walter Baker was safe on an infield hit and Bruce drove in Buckley and Kirkpatrick.

VU is scheduled to host Lake Michigan at 4 p.m. Friday at Jerry Blemker Field. On Saturday, the Trailblazers will meet Henry Ford College in a seven-inning contest at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Parkland in a seven-inning game at 7 p.m. Saturday night.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
