Roster changes for VU Men after break

BY TRAVIS DAVID

VINCENNES, Ind. – The No. 2 ranked Vincennes University Men’s Basketball team will have a bit of a different look coming out of the Christmas break.

Redshirt freshman Jayrese Williams is expected to see the court for the first time in his Trailblazer career on Thursday night against Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.

Williams was redshirted last season, while he spent the first half of this season out with an injury. Williams was medically cleared before the Trailblazers final game of the first half against Lincoln Trail College.

“We dressed Jayrese for the LTC game, but felt like it would be best to give him a little more time over the break before putting him out on the floor,” Trailblazers Coach Todd Franklin said.

The 6-foot guard from Sandusky, OH graduated as the Blue Streaks all-time leading scorer (1,721 points) breaking Scott May’s mark of 1,232.

Williams was a two-time Associated Press Division II All-Ohio first-team selection.

In an unrelated roster move, Franklin confirmed guard Cardell McGee will not return to the Trailblazers in the second half of the season.

“Cardell informed us on December 27 he felt like it was in his best interest if he looked to transfer to another school,” Franklin said. “We wish Cardell the best in his future and we will be more than happy in helping him land with someone else.”

Franklin also stated once McGee officially withdrawals from classes at VU, the university will grant him a full release with no restrictions.

In 11 games this season – six starts – McGee averaged 7.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

Franklin also mentioned the team is hoping to have 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman Kevin Osawe medically cleared to rejoin the team in the near future.

The Trailblazers (13-0) play host to ECTC Thursday night and Indiana Elite Prep Saturday night before returning to District 16 play against Olney Central on Jan. 9. All three games are inside the P.E. Complex with 7 p.m. tipoff.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
