Shots won't fall for VU Women's Basketball in second half in setback at WVC

MT. CARMEL, Ill. - The Vincennes University Women's Basketball Team's offensive production disappeared in the second half and host Wabash Valley College found its groove on the offensive end in the second 20 minutes Wednesday night as the Trailblazers fell, 80-57, to the Warriors.

VU (21-3) got 13 points from freshman Chelsea Bentley and 10 each from sophomores Nicole Dodd and Anais Kirvan.

The Trailblazers battled throughout the first half and clawed their way back from being down 15-7 at one point to take a 21-20 lead with 6:45 remaining before halftime. However, Wabash Valley regrouped and led 31-29 at intermission.

After the break, the Warriors put together a 16-6 run to open the second half and opened up a 47-35 lead near the 14:30 mark. VU answered with a pair of Kirvan jumpers and an Emily Lueken 3-pointer to get within 47-42, but the Warriors responded with a conventional three-point play and went on another nine-point streak before Bentley scored four straight for VU.

But that would be the end of any significant VU offensive output and Wabash Valley pulled away by outscoring the Trailblazers 24-11 the rest of the way.

Wabash Valley was also aided by a 38-24 rebounding advantage and a 13-for-16 performance at the free throw line while VU shot 10-for-23 at the stripe. In addition, the Warriors shot 58.5 percent from the floor, overall.

VU will host Shawnee Community College at 5 p.m. Saturday at the VU P.E. Complex. The VU men will follow vs. Shawnee at about 7 p.m.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
