Stifling Defense Key to VU Women’s Basketball Blow Out of Lindsey Wilson in Home Opener

Coach Meeks stated that the key to the success of the Vincennes University Women’s Basketball Team at the Cincinnati State Classic was their defense, and that was on display in their home opener Monday night at the VU P.E. Complex.

The game got off to a slow start for the Trailblazers as Lindsey Wilson scored first, and the VU offense seemed to stall slightly out of the gate. However, after a bucket from Sophomore Laurhen Pickett to get Vincennes on the board, and the dial was turned up defensively, VU began to click on all cylinders. The Lady Trailblazers took their first lead with 4:40 left in the first quarter, and would never look back.

VU would use stifling defense to cause 22 turnovers in the first half, and would grow a 57-19 lead going into the half. At the half, Sophomore Jeanier Olukemi had racked up 20 of her game high 28 points, and Sophomore Laurhen Pickett had poked away 4 steals.

Vincennes continued that defensive trend in the second half, completely tightening the screws on what was left of the Blue Raider offense. The Lady Trailblazers forced an incredible 40 turnovers on the game, and held Lindsey Wilson to an abysmal 32% from the field.

Leading the way for the Lady Trailblazers was Sophomore Jeanier Olukemi who tallied 28 points and 6 steals. Freshman Mykel Roth added 17 points, and Sophomore Milana Matias scored 14 points, pulled down 7 boards, and had 4 steals.

The Lady Trailblazers will be back in action Friday against Gulf Coast in Panama City, Florida at 6 p.m.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
