Strong 2nd Half Defense Boosts Lady Blazers Past Southeastern Illinois

On sophomore night at the VU P.E. complex, the #22 nationally ranked Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers would use a strong second-half defensively, and monster games from Ladellia Maggett, Laurhen Pickett, and Claudia Stan to comeback from a 1st-half deficit to topple the Lady Falcons of Southeastern Illinois 86-to-74 for their 24th win of the season.

Southeastern Illinois would score on their first possession of the contest, but Freshman Mykah Roth would answer immediately to tie the score at 2 on the next Blazer possession. After a bucket by the Lady Falcons, Freshman Ladellia Maggett would steal the ball and race to the other end on 3 straight possessions to give VU a 10-4 lead. Maggett would eventually score 12 of VU’s 22 first-quarter points, and the score was deadlocked at 22 after 10 minutes of play.

The Lady Falcons struck first in the 2nd, but Maggett would again answer with a 3 at the other end to give VU a 1-point edge. Vander of Southeastern Illinois buried a 3 of her own on the next possession, and Southeastern Illinois would go on a 9-0 run to take the largest lead of the contest with 1:22 to play in the half. The Lady Blazers would cut the deficit to 5, but still trailed 44-to-39 going into half-time. Ladellia Maggett had racked up 23 points, and poked away 4 steals after 20 minutes of action.

The Lady Trailblazers showed why they were the #22 team in the NJCAA coming out of the locker room in the 3rd. They turned up the defense, forcing 6 Falcon turnovers in the quarter, and would come storming back to take a 68-59 lead after 3 by winning the 3rd quarter by a score of 29-to-15.

Other factors to the Lady Blazers success in the second half was the continued scoring of Ladellia Maggett, but also Sophomore Laurhen Pickett catching fire. Pickett would score 15 of her 19 points in the second-half, as well as Maggett adding 15 of her game-high 38. The Lady Trailblazers would coast to an 86-74 win over a Southeastern Illinois team that had only lost 4 games on the year, and put themselves in a position to challenge Wabash Valley College for the regular-season District B title on Tuesday night.

Ladellia Maggett had another astounding game for the Trailblazers. She scored 38-points, drained 7-of-15 shots from 3-point land, ripped down 8 rebounds, handed out 7 assists, and picked away 6 steals. Laurhen Pickett continued her string of double-doubles by scoring 19 points, and tearing-down 10 rebounds. Freshman Claudia Stan had a career night as she scored 12 points, 1 point shy of her career-high, and pulled-down a career-high 15 rebounds. Fellow freshman Myka Roth also had a strong night, showing up on the stat-sheet for 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The Lady Trailblazers will have a chance to challenge #15, and 25-and-1 Wabash Valley College for the regular-season District B title on Tuesday at Pack the House Night at the VU P.E. Comlex! Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. EST! Go VU!

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
