Strong Contributions from Sophomores Leads #5 Blazers to Regular Season District 16 Title on Sophomore Night

The #5 Vincennes University Trailblazers clinched the regular-season District 16 title with an 81-51 victory over the Falcons of Southeastern Illinois on sophomore night at the VU P.E. Complex tonight, thanks to big efforts by many of those very same players who were being honored pre-game.

VU got off to a hot start as sophomore stand-out Chris Darrington buried a triple on the team’s first trip down the floor. Southeastern Illinois would claw their way back into what was a scrappy first several minutes of play, and take their first, lead of the game with 17 minutes to play in the half. The teams would trade baskets for the next several minutes, until Vincennes would eventually go on a 26-6 run to bust the game wide opened, fueled by sophomore Nate Hansen, and Chris Darrington, who were the high-point men for the Trailblazers in the first-half. VU had racked up a sizeable 41-to-17, 24-point half-time lead, and were led in scoring by Chris Darrington with 15 points. Hansen followed closely with 12 points, and 6 rebounds.

The Trailblazers would enjoy much of the same success that they enjoyed in the first-half in the second, as they were able to balance out the scoring, spread around shots, spread around minutes, and put together a great team other to put-away the Falcons in the second-half. VU forced Southeastern Illinois to turn the ball over 12 times in the second-half, and held them to 0-for-7 from behind the arc. Vincennes University would roll to an 81-51, 30-point win over Southeastern Illinois, capture their 27th win of the season, and clinch the District 16 regular-season title. All of these events occurred on a night where Vincennes University honored the contributions and sacrifices of the great sophomore class that composes of: Jaelin Sanford, Dainius Chatkevicius, Romaro Gill, Nate Hansen, and Chris Darrington.

Several of these players were absolutely instrumental in the victory over the falcons this evening. Nate Hansen led VU in scoring with 25 points on 7-of-12 shooting from 3-point territory. Hansen also pulled down 9 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists. Chris Darrington continued his sensational sophomore season by scoring 20 points, and adding 5 assists. Finally, sophomore Jaelin Sanford also pitched in 8 points and 6 assists.

The #5 Vincennes University Trailblazers will return to action on Tuesday at the VU P.E. Complex on Pack the House Night against Wabash Valley College! Pack the House night is a VU sponsored event where free pizza will be delivered to the dorm with the highest student turn-out, a gift-certificate for the bookstore will be given to the student with the most-school spirit, and tickets for free popcorn and drinks will be handed in hopes of “packing the house” for the last home basketball game of the season! Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. est. Go Trailblazers!

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
