Trailblazer baseball falls to No. 1 Wabash Valley

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University baseball team took on its second straight ranked opponent on Monday.

Unfortunately, the Trailblazers couldn’t score the upset victory. Wabash Valley, No. 1 in the NJCAA Division I national poll, won 12-2 in eight innings at Jerry Blemker Field.

Whereas, VU picked up two wins over Heartland, No. 19 in NJCAA Division II, on Friday and Saturday. The Trailblazers split the four-game series with the Hawks, winning 9-2 on Friday and 7-2 on Saturday.

Against Wabash Valley, freshman Sean Becker scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning to get the Trailblazers within 3-1.

In the fifth inning, freshman Max Flock scored on a wild pitch to cut Wabash Valley’s lead to 5-2.

VU sophomore starting pitcher Bricem Thompson allowed three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. He struck out two and walked four.

VU managed three hits.

Flock hit a double. Becker and sophomore Caleb Helms also had hits.

Becker added a stolen base.

The Trailblazers are 20-26 overall.

VU was originally scheduled to play at home against Olney Central on May 1, but the game has been canceled and will not be made up. Olney Central must make up Great Rivers Athletic Conference play this week.

Next up for the Trailblazers is a four-game Mid-West Athletic Conference series against Danville Area. The teams will play a doubleheader at Jerry Blemker Field on May 4 beginning at 1:30 p.m. EDT. They will face off in a doubleheader on May 5 in Danville at 2 p.m. EDT.

VU has an 8-16 conference record.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
