Trailblazer’s Off to Hot Start on Day One of Regional Golf Championships

Harrison, OH – After 36-holes of golf played at the Miami Whitewater Golf Course hosting the DII & DIII NJCAA Golf Regional, The VU Trailblazer Golf Team currently sits 2nd, and sophomore Blake Claycomb is tied for 1st individually.

The Trailblazers got off to a great first 18 holes of golf. Blake Claycomb’s first 18-hole score of 69 was the lowest score for any set of 18-holes played on the day, and his VU teammates were cruising as well. Freshman Keegan McCullough shot 77, Zach Breault shot 79, Tanner Gray shot 81, and Cody Weber rounded out the scoring with 90. The Blazers also led all teams after the first round of play.

The Trailblazers faded some the 2nd set of 18-holes. Claycomb and McCullough were tied for the low-man position with 76, Freshman Zach Breault followed closely with 77, Tanner gray showed some consistency by shooting 82, just one stroke off of his first-round score, and Cody Weber again rounded out the scoring for VU with 93. The Trailblazers fell 12-strokes behind Cleveland State Community College, but Blake Claycomb remained tied for the #1 individual scorer in the tournament.

VU Golf Coach Dennis Chattin said after their first day of play, “Overall, I was pretty pleased with the first two rounds of golf that we played. I thought we played really, really great the first 18-holes. The first 18 that Blake shot was without a doubt the best 18-holes played at the tournament thus far, and maybe the best he has played in a VU uniform. I was a little disappointed with our 2nd set of holes, but we have come back and rebounded on the second day time, and time again, so I am confident that we will come-out on top, giving ourselves a chance to defend our 2016 DII National Championship.”

The Trailblazers will return for 18 more holes of golf tomorrow, and will look to capture the team title to advance to the NJCAA DIII Golf Championships on June 6th-9th at Chautauqua Community College in Chautauqua, New York!

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
