Trailblazer volleyball team wraps up season in district semifinals

CARTERVILLE, Ill. – Vincennes University’s volleyball team held leads in all three sets, but No. 11 Iowa Western managed to get by the Trailblazers 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 in the semifinals of the NJCAA Division I Midwest A District Championship on Nov. 9 at Carterville High School.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Alison Smith (Oakland, Ill.) recorded eight kills and eight digs. Sophomore Ryleigh Fidler (Linton, Ind.) added eight kills.

Freshman Breanna Metzger (Tennyson, Ill.) collected six blocks. Sophomore Ariana Gentzler (Paxton, Ill.) had five blocks. Sophomores Ryli Bobbitt (Sullivan, Ind.) and Grace Doane (Vincennes, Ind.) posted four blocks apiece.

Freshman Savannah Grimes (Dieterich, Ill.) led the Blazers with 11 assists. Sophomore Lauren McCrary (Vincennes, Ind.) finished with eight assists and two aces.

Sophomore Brantli Lannan (Linton, Ind.) contributed 12 digs.

VU Coach Gary Sien says. . .

“Against such a good team as Iowa Western, we knew we had to play at a high level and if our team total of 22 blocks is an indication, we sure did. We battled through most of the match and had leads in every set. Despite the result, it was a big and proud moment for the team especially for our seven returning players.”

  • The Trailblazers closed out the season with a 23-20 overall record.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
