Trailblazers baseball collects win against Eureka

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University baseball team tallied 11 hits in a 7-3 win against Eureka College’s junior varsity team at Jerry Blemker Field on Monday.

Freshmen Sean Becker and Ryan Robison had three hits apiece for the Trailblazers, who own a 6-6 overall record.

Robison was 3-for-5 with a double. He also had two RBIs and scored one run. Becker was 3-for-4 with a double and scored two runs.

Sophomores Walker Paris and Tyler Estes added RBIs.

VU jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first inning. Eureka scored twice in the top of the second inning for a 3-2 edge.

The Trailblazers quickly evened the score with a tying run in the bottom of the second. They put five unanswered runs on the scoreboard, including two in the sixth inning that stretched their lead to 6-3.

Freshman Kacey Cheek was the winning pitcher. He had three hitless innings, struck out four and walked one.

Robison was the starting pitcher. He logged five strikeouts in three innings. He walked one. He gave up four hits and three earned runs.

After Cheek, sophomore Luke Lancaster, sophomore Austin Walden, Paris and freshman Noah Woodward took to the mound and none allowed a hit. Lancaster and Walden struck out two batters apiece.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

NJCAA spring sport cancellation

The NJCAA announced on March 16 the cancellation of all spring sport competition and all upcoming basketball championships, effective immediately, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
