Trailblazers get volleyball sweep at home

VINCENNES, Ind. -- Kloie McGrew served up three consecutive aces to help the Vincennes University Women’s Volleyball team rally in the third set and complete a sweep over visiting Kaskaskia College Thursday night, 25-21, 25-23, 26-24.

Trailing 24-22, in the third, Ryleigh Fidler put away a kill to set up McGrew’s heroics.

“I don’t think I have ever seen it done in a match,” VU coach Gary Sien said of McGrew closing out the match with three aces in succession. “But she just serves so well. We had actually been serving away from where she served the first one, but since it worked so well we decided to just go back to it.”

With the win VU improves to 15-8 on the season and 6-0 against NJCAA Region 24 opponents.

McGrew finished with four aces -- the only ones of the match for VU -- to go along with 19 assists.

Kaskaskia led most of the first set. A kill by Fidler gave the Trailblazers a 17-16 led and they did not trail the rest of the first.

Ryli Bobbitt capped the first set with one of her two blocks on the night.

The two teams traded points throughout most of the second set as well. Ariana Gentzler recorded three kills in a span of four points as VU took control of the set with a 20-14 lead.

The six-point advantage was the largest of the night, for either team.

“We knew coming in it would be a close match,” Sien said. “We played them close at their place. But we challenged the team tonight. We told them when it got tight late in the games they needed to step up and focus. No errors of any kind. And they did that tonight. Especially in the third, when it looked like we were going to go to a fourth.”

Alison Smith, who was recruited by Kaskaskia, led the VU attack at the net with a match-high 13 kills. The freshman also finished with 13 digs.

Lucie Strasser also had a double-double with 19 assists and 13 digs.

Allison Ruddick continued her impressive defensive season with 23 digs.

Ruddick entered the match second among NJCAA DI players in digs.

“She is just exceptional,” Sien said of his defensive specialist. “It’s just dig after dig after dig for her.”

Grace Doane added three blocks in the win.

VU returns to the court Friday at Lake Land.
