Trailblazers move up one spot in latest NJCAA poll


The Vincennes University Men’s basketball team moved up one spot in the latest NJCAA Division I Poll released Tuesday afternoon.

The Trailblazers received 383 points, including four first-place votes, to earn a No. 2 ranking.

Defending National Champions, South Plains made the climb to the top with 394 points. Plains occupied the No. 2 spot last week.

Last week’s No. 1 Northwest Florida State dropped to No. 4 in the latest rankings after suffering its first defeat of the season. The Raiders lost a 87-73 decision to unranked East Florida State, before bouncing back to beat No. 5 Florida Northwestern State, 69-65.

Rounding out the top 5 are: No. 3 Coffeyville and No. 5 Tallahassee. The complete rankings can be found here.

The Trailblazers, who are still No. 1 in the latest Massey Ratings, needed overtime to keep their undefeated start to the season. District 16 foe Kaskaskia took the Trailblazers to an extra session on Saturday.

Career high in points for Lony Francis, Jr. (31) and George Dixon (20) along with 21 points from Keith Clemons, helped VU prevail 98-92.

The Trailblazers return to the court on Monday, traveling to district foe Lincoln Trail. The game is part of a women’s and men’s double header starting at 6:30 p.m. (EST).

More District 16 news: John A. Logan moved up two spots to No. 11 this week. The Vols are 10-1 on the season with their only loss coming to the Trailblazers...Olney Central dropped it first contest of the season on Saturday with a loss to Lincoln Trail. The Blue Knights were receiving votes in last week’s poll but are completely out of the rankings this week.

Play for Kay Cancer Awareness

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.
