Trailblazers open outdoor track and field season

MARION, Ind. – The Vincennes University men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the outdoor season at the 28th annual Indiana Wesleyan University Polar Bear Invitational on Saturday.

The Trailblazers produced eight top-four finishes in the men’s competition.

Sophomore Tony Cappola took the top spot in the pole vault. He cleared 4.35m (14’-3.25”).

Freshman Maxwell Kiplagat placed second in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. He completed the race in 9:53.78.

Silas Ristl picked up a pair of top-three finishes in the throwing events. The freshman took second in the shot put with a mark of 17.04 (55’-11”).  Ristl placed third in the discus with a mark of 47.33m (155’-3”).

The 4x100 relay team of Kevon Louis, Tyland Sheard, Zachary Allen and Walter Martin finished third in the finals. The freshman foursome completed the race in 44.30 seconds.

In the 400-meter run, Allen finished third in 50.91 seconds.

Freshman Milan Todorovic added a fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run for the Trailblazers. He crossed the finish line in 4:03.79.

Todorovic, Allen, freshman David McCullough and sophomore Josh Hodge teamed up in the 4x400-meter relay and produced a fourth-place finish. The Trailblazers clocked a 3:28.86.

They were other top-10 finishes as well for the VU men’s squad.

Sophomore Seth Vaquero was seventh in the men’s 800-meter run in 1:59.35.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Louis was eighth in 1:00.54.

Among the highlights for the Trailblazers women’s team was sophomore Jazzmine Poole placing sixth in the discus. Her best mark was 39.04m (128’-1”).

Sophomore Taylin Bradenberger took ninth in the 800-meter run in 2:32.11.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Brandenberger, freshman Heaven Kirksey, freshman Kaylee Lange and freshman Asia McLemore placed 10th in 4:29.74.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
