Trailblazers open spring volleyball season

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University volleyball team opened the spring season with exhibition scrimmages against Rose-Hulman and Indiana University East at the P.E. Complex on Saturday.

Each scrimmage was four sets.

The Trailblazers’ Alison Smith and Lucie Strasser had double-double performances in both matches.

In the first scrimmage, VU played Rose-Hulman and split the four sets contested between the two teams 18-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-20.

Smith, Strasser and Kloie McGrew all posted a double-double for the Trailblazers.

Smith notched 13 kills and 12 digs. Strasser tallied 26 assists and 13 digs. McGrew recorded 17 assists and 10 digs.

McGrew also hit four aces.

Allison Ruddick led the way with 19 digs and had a pair of aces.

Ryleigh Fidler contributed 12 kills, while Grace Doane added 10 kills.

Ariana Gentzler had four blocks. Ryli Bobbitt followed with three blocks.

In the second scrimmage, the Trailblazers split the four sets with Indiana University East 25-14, 24-26, 25-17, 20-25.

Smith and Strasser recorded their second double-doubles of the day. Smith logged 16 digs and 12 kills. Strasser collected 13 digs and 12 assists.

Ruddick registered 28 digs.

Gentzler finished with eight kills and three blocks.

McGrew had a team-high 15 assists.

Fidler hit seven kills.

Brantli Lannan had 14 digs against Indiana University East and 11 digs against Rose-Hulman.

“This was a great experience for our team to play two good four-year programs,” VU Volleyball Coach Gary Sien said. “Even better to see two of our own, Genesis Milisde and Cali Topolski, at their four-year school Indiana University East. It means a lot to assistant coach Mike Misner and I to assist our students in continuing their academic and athletic careers. We strive to get our students into the best fit possible.

“The day was also notable as we had a number of future Trailblazers in attendance from the classes of 2019 through 2022. Blazers from the past, present and future were all there.”

Up next on the spring schedule for the Trailblazers is a tournament at the University of Evansville on April 13.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
