Trailblazers remain perfect in Region 24

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. -- A weekend full of nationally ranked competition proved beneficial for the Vincennes University Womens' volleyball team. The Lady Trailblazers returned to winning ways Tuesday night with a 25-14, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17 road win over Wabash Valley.

With the win, VU improves to 14-8 overall and 5-0 against NJCAA Division I Region 24 foes.

The only bump in the road on Tuesday came in the second set. The Trailblazers led 21-18, before Wabash Valley closed out the set on a 7-2 run.

“We made a lot of unforced errors in the second set,” VU coach Gary Sien noted. “We simply beat ourselves in that second set.”

But Sien mentioned he was pleased with the way his team responded after dropping three of four matches over the weekend.

“Overall it was a good match,” he said. “We finished with 23 blocks and 92 digs which is usually makes for a winning combination.”

Ariana Gentzler led the defense at the net with nine blocks, while Grace Doane added four stuffs. Gentzler also added nine kills in the win.

Allison Ruddick finished with 33 digs, while Alison Smith (23) and Lucie Strassed (10) combined for 33.

Smith led the offensive attack with 20 kills, as Ryleigh Fidler put away 14.

Ryli Bobbitt served up six aces.

Sien lauded the efforts of Strasser and Smith.

“Lucie and Alison both played a great match as they had double-double matches,” the Trailblazers coach said.

VU returns home to face Kaskaskia on Thursday. The match is faculty appreciation night and tips at 7 p.m.
