Trey Kennedy gives VU 3rd title at NJCAA outdoor championships

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Vincennes University Track Teams’ efforts so far today at the weather-delayed NJCAA Outdoor National Championships were highlighted by VU freshman Trey Kennedy giving the Trailblazers their third national title at the event. Kennedy won the Men’s Pole Vault today at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, KS, when he vaulted 16 feet, ¾ inch.

The Pole Vault crown follows the championship that VU sophomore Kaitlyn Moricz won Friday in the Women’s Pole Vault and sophomore TaPring Goatee’s title in the Women’s Steeplechase.

Freshman Michael Boger was ninth and Blake Marsee was 11th (both at 14 feet, 3.25) for VU in the Pole Vault.

Also today, sophomore Robert Murphy, who finished a close second in Friday’s Men’s Steeplechase, was third in the 1500 Meter Run. Murphy finished in 3:52.58 while Central Arizona’s Harry Mulenga won with a time of 3:49.75.

Sophomore Eric Blackman followed up his fourth place finish in the Decathlon earlier in the meet with today’s fourth place effort in the Men’s High Jump. Blackman’s 6 feet, 9.75-inch jump keyed the Trailblazers’ three-person showing in the High Jump’s Top 15. Freshman Jordan Feuerstein was 11th at 6 feet, 6 inches while sophomore Kenneth “KJ” Lloyd was 13th, also at 6 feet, 6 inches.

Another top 10 performance for VU today at the championship meet was freshman Kelly O’Shea’s seventh place in the Women’s 1500 Meter Run. O’Shea turned in a time of 4:54.27 while winner, Lydia Mato of Barton County, had a time of 4:33.84.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
