Vincennes University bowling shows promise at Hoosier Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Hoosier Classic is known as one of the largest and most historic events of the regular season. The teams enter the last event of the regular season knowing the 51st Hoosier Classic to be one of the most challenging tournaments, partly in thanks to lane pattern designer Nick Hogland. This year’s qualifying format was 6 team games on day 1 followed by 15 baker games day 2. The 78 varsity team field is then cut to just the top 8 for a bracket finals to determine the winner.

Day 1 - The Vincennes University men began the day with a 5-person team set of 915, a fair start on challenging conditions. This was led by Connor Hickey (SR.) with a game of 226.

The next game the team found a great struggle to push for scores and walked away with the low set of the event at 777. After a quick regroup the team followed this up with 2 very reasonable sets of 957 and 985. From there VU managed sets of 822 and 895 for sets 5 and 6 respectively. The Blazers left day 1 sitting in 57th out of the 78-team field.

Averages

  • Sean Barriger   143 - 1 game
  • Keaton Green   205.5 - 6 games
  • Connor Hickey  189.1 - 6 games
  • Joshua Taylor   171.8 - 6 games
  • Isaac Wake       171   - 6 games
  • Michael Whiteside 156.6 - 5 games

Day 2 – Vincennes University started off significantly better in bakers posting a 5-game baker set of 959. VU continued the run posting up a 955 in set 2. Set 3 presented a few more challenges and transition took a toll on some of the successful lines our players used toward the beginning. This along with some troubles in spare shooting left set 3 at 896 and a 187.3 baker average on the day. The effort allowed VU to make up 12 positions and finish 45th on the weekend.

VU Coach Jesse Gibson Says

“This season has been one of the more difficult to swallow. Our program expects top performance in competition and to continue our competitive image in the bowling world. We've had several struggles throughout the season and I personally believe this will only benefit the program as a whole. This weekend was no different as our program is known to shine a bit more in the high-pressure atmosphere. While we did not finish where we would like to have, I did see more of the competitive edge come back at times. Much different than the team we have seen so far this semester. We continue to identify areas to work on and many of our athletes are starting see the results paying off from their work. I'm confident if we take this time to continue to prepare ourselves and iron out the wrinkles that we will be truly competitive once again by sectionals.”

Next Up

The Blazers are looking forward to going all in at sectionals on March 13-15. The bowling schedule will be updated with the host city as soon as Vincennes University is made aware of which location they will be traveling to for sectionals.
