Vincennes University baseball completes series sweep with dominant wins

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University baseball team completed a three-game series of Edison State at Jerry Blemker Field on Saturday.

The Trailblazers won 8-3 on Friday, then rolled to a pair of five-inning victories during Saturday’s doubleheader. VU won 20-9 and 10-0.

Game 1

VU 8, Edison State 3

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore CF Jared Sermersheim (Jasper, Ind.) was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a double. Sophomore 2B Trent Weiss (Hagerstown, Ind.) had two RBIs and double. Freshman DH McCaine Claycomb (Vincennes, Ind.) hit 2-for-4 and added two RBIs and run.

Sophomore C Luke Stock (Clarksville, Ind.) had one hit, drove in two runs and was hit by a pitch.

Sophomore 1B Ryan Robison (New Albany, Ind.) scored two runs, walked twice and contributed a hit.

Freshman Isaac Lane (Vincennes, Ind.), freshman LF Landen Freestone (Anderson, Ind.) and sophomore 3B Max Flock (Georgetown, Ind.) delivered one hit apiece. Freestone and Flock both scored runs.

Sophomore RHP Nate Toone (Evansville, Ind.) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in his 4.2 innings. The starter struck out two and walked four. Freshman RHP Eli Winkler (Bardstown, Ky.) earned his second win of the season. He struck out four, walked four and didn’t allow a run or hit in 4.1 innings.

Game Recap

All of the runs were put on the scoreboard in the second and third innings. In the top of the second inning, Edison State took a 3-0 lead. VU tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the second. Robison and Freestone led off the inning with walks. Flock’s bunt loaded the bases. Claycomb’s RBI single scored Robison. Sermersheim’s RBI infield single scored Freestone. Stock was hit by a pitch, scoring Flock.

Robison led off the bottom of the third with a walk and stole second base. Claycomb’s two-out single scored Robison, and he moved to second base on the throw home.  Sermersheim hit a double down the left-field line and Claycomb scored. Stock’s single scored Sermersheim. Becker’s walk put runners on first and second. Weiss delivered a double down the left-field line, scoring Stock. Becker scored on an error.

Game 2

VU 20, Edison State 9, 5 innings

VU Statistical Leaders

Freshman C Nate McVaigh (Evansville, Ind.) was 3-for-3 with four runs and two RBIs.  Freshman INF Gage Wilson (Montgomery, Ind.) hit 3-for-4 with a double, drove in three runs and scored once.

Lane hit 2-for-2 with a home run. He also had three RBIs and scored three runs.

Sermersheim scored two runs and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Robison collected two RBIs and a double.

INF Cody Swimm (Hagerstown, Ind.) finished with a double and scored a run.

Freshman RF Devon Rodgers (Columbus, Ind.) scored three runs and hit a double.

Freestone scored twice and had a RBI.

Sophomore RHP Kacey Cheek (Oblong, Ill.) struck out seven, allowed six runs on three hits, walked four and hit a batter in 4 innings. Freshman RHP Ben Balogh (Zionsville, Ind.) earned the win in relief, allowing zero runs, one hit on a walk and one strikeout in .2 innings for his first win.

Game Recap

The Trailblazers out hit Edison State 10-7. They scored in every inning they batted.

Game 3

VU 10, Edison State 0, 5 innings

VU Statistical Leaders

Robison threw a complete game shutout to earn his second win this season. He struck out six, walked four and allowed two hits in five innings.

Robison also hit a grand slam. He was 2-for-2 with a walk.

Lane was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scored once. He had a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch.

Rodgers was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.

Claycomb had two RBIs and scored a run.

Weiss scored twice, stole two bases and hit a triple.

Sophomore C Ian Martin (Freetown, Ind.) scored two runs.

Game Recap

VU scored three runs in the second and seven in the third. The win improved VU’s overall record to 10-5. The Blazers are 9-2 at home.

Next up

The Trailblazers play on March 10 against Frontier College in Fairfield, Ill. The nine-inning game begins at 4 p.m. EDT.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

NJCAA spring sport cancellation

The NJCAA announced on March 16 the cancellation of all spring sport competition and all upcoming basketball championships, effective immediately, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
