Vincennes University baseball finishes 1-2 against Motlow State in first road series

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. - The Vincennes University baseball team opened its 2020 spring season at Motlow State with a doubleheader on Feb. 15. The Trailblazers split the first day’s series 1-1, winning the first game 14-2, and losing the second 10-0.

Sophomore RHP Nate Toone pitched a complete game to pick up his first win of the season. Offensively, the Blazers scored in every inning of the first game.

In the third game of the series on Feb. 16, the Blazers fell 13-12 in a back-and-forth battle. Sophomore Ryan Robison was a standout performer, striking out 3 batters, as well as only allowing one hit. He also brought in the most important four runs of the game in the top of the seventh. Down 0-2 in the count, Robinson let loose and hit a grand slam, putting the Blazers back in the lead at 12-10. Unfortunately, Motlow State scored three runs in the eighth, and VU was unable to respond.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Ryan Robison (New Albany, Ind.) went 3-for-3 with five RBIs, including a home run in the first game of the series. Sophomore Nate Toone (Evansville, Ind.) threw five innings, allowing two runs on four hits, walked two, and struck out four in Game One. Freshman McCaine Claycomb (Vincennes, Ind.) went 2-for-3 in Game One and also secured a single RBI.


  • Sophomore Ryan Robison now has one home run and one grand slam in three games.
  • This brings Vincennes University’s overall season record to 1-2

Next up

The Trailblazers welcome Ancilla College for the home opener Friday, Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m. EST. This will be immediately followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 22, with the first game set to start at 1:30 p.m. EST, and the second at 4 p.m. EST. Both games will be hosted at Jerry Blemker Field in Vincennes.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

NJCAA spring sport cancellation

The NJCAA announced on March 16 the cancellation of all spring sport competition and all upcoming basketball championships, effective immediately, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
